Surge protection

Lightning does not have to strike your building to cause damage. A strike kilometres away, or switching operations in the grid, produces overvoltages that damage inverters, air conditioners, computers, security systems and household appliances. Surge protective devices (SPDs) limit these impulses to safe values.

The three stages of protection

  • Type 1 (Class I / B) – at the service entrance; handles direct lightning currents; mandatory where an external LPS is installed
  • Type 2 (Class II / C) – in the main and distribution boards; the basic protection for every building
  • Type 3 (Class III / D) – at socket outlets and close to sensitive equipment; fine protection for electronics

What the service includes

  • Inspection of the electrical installation and earthing (without good earthing an SPD cannot do its job)
  • Selection of devices according to the earthing system (TN, TT), the rated current and whether an LPS is present
  • Installation in the board with the correct conductor cross-sections and the shortest possible connection leads
  • Protection of telephone, internet and antenna lines where needed
  • Checking and replacing worn-out SPD modules at periodic inspections

Frequently asked questions

I have circuit breakers and an RCD – don't they protect me?
No. Circuit breakers respond to overloads and short circuits, and the RCD to earth leakage. A lightning impulse lasts microseconds and passes straight through them. Only an SPD diverts it to earth before it reaches the equipment.
How much does surge protection for a house cost?
A Type 2 set for a detached house, installed in the main board, is a relatively small investment compared with the cost of a single inverter or air conditioner. We give an exact price after inspecting the board.
