Is lightning protection mandatory in Bulgaria?
Yes, for many categories of buildings. Ordinance No. 4/2010 defines which buildings and facilities require lightning protection depending on their use, height, location and risk. For new construction the requirement applies at the design stage. If in doubt, send us a description of the site and we will tell you.
What is the difference between a lightning rod and lightning protection?
"Lightning rod" is the everyday name for the air terminal – the rod on the roof. Lightning protection is the whole system: air terminal, down-conductors, earth electrode, equipotential bonding and surge protection. A rod without a good earth electrode and without SPDs is only half a solution.
How much does lightning protection for a house cost?
It depends on the size and type of roof, the chosen solution (mesh or ESE), the soil for the earth electrode and whether SPDs are added. We give an exact quote after a free survey. As a guide, the installation for a typical detached house is comparable to the price of a good-quality air conditioner.
How long does the installation last and when is it inspected?
A well-built installation serves for decades but must be inspected periodically – under EN 62305 a visual inspection every 1 to 2 years and a full inspection with measurements every 2 to 4 years, depending on the class. It must also be inspected after a known lightning strike.
Do you work outside Sofia?
Yes, nationwide. The survey in Sofia and the surrounding region is free; for more distant sites we agree the conditions in advance, and once the works are awarded, travel is included in the quote.
I have solar panels on the roof – do I need anything extra?
Almost always. The modules and mounting structure are metal at the highest point of the building. They need to be within the protected zone of the air terminals or isolated from them, the structure must be bonded to the earth electrode, and the inverter needs SPDs on the DC and AC sides.
Can you test and certify an old installation?
Yes. We test existing earthing and lightning protection systems, issue a certificate and, if there are non-conformities, propose how to fix them.
How do I request a quote?
Fill in the form on the Contact page or call us. We will ask a few questions about the site, arrange a survey, and you will usually receive an itemised quote within a few days after the visit.
